Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made an unexpected lunchtime visit to a South Derbyshire pub at the weekend.

He made an appearance at the Wheel Inn in Burton Road, Midway, and got a stunned reaction from punters and staff.

The Scot was on his way to watch his grandson play football in Repton, it is believed. The pub has since posted a photo of his visit on social media sites.

Nicola Jory, manager at the pub, said: "We had just finished the breakfast when he and his wife and his driver came in and had lunch, a few drinks and coffees. At that time we didn't have many customers in as it was still quite early.

"Paul (Marriott, pub manager) suddenly came into the kitchen and gasped, saying Alex Ferguson was in the pub. I thought he was joking. Then I came out.

"I couldn't believe it. I actually asked him if he was a lookalike.

"He was a nice, friendly man. We served them and left them to their privacy."

The pub said it had been given a boost since it posted a photo of his visit on its Facebook and Twitter sites, with the image reaching more than 13,000 people. Miss Jory added: "The reaction since has been incredible . We didn't post anything on while he was there, but we had our photo taken with him and put it on the pages later. "The photo has reached about 13,000 people so far which gives us such a boost."
