Derbyshire fire chiefs have issued warnings about smoke alarms following an inquest into the deaths of two children and two adults in Derbyshire. Josie Leighton, Claire James, Tyler Green and Jordan Green all lost their lives in a fire at a house on Williamthorpe Road, North Wingfield, Chesterfield on November 20 2013. Whilst the fire investigation concluded that there were working smoke alarms fitted into the property on Williamthorpe Road, evidence presented at the coroner's inquest into their deaths found that the smoke alarms were ignored due to intermittent sounding of the devices. Area Manager, Steve McLernon, said "Working smoke alarms are designed to give you and your family early warning of a fire and time to escape. "Activated smoke alarms should not be ignored. If an alarm sounds please ensure you investigate the reason and if you believe there to be a fault, get your smoke alarms checked out as soon as possible. "If you hear a neighbours alarm sounding, don't hesitate to call 999. We would rather be called out to a false alarm than not at all." Smoke alarms should be fitted on every level of your home and tested on a weekly basis. For more information about keeping safe at home, please visit www.derbys-fire.gov.uk
